Salford falter as Colchester take all three points

Updated: Mar 26, 2022

Salford City’s play-off hopes have taken a dent after a 3-0 defeat to Colchester United at the Peninsula Stadium. A debut goal from Myles Kenlock, as well as goals from Luke Chambers and Corrie Andrews, sealed all three points for the visitors.

Colchester almost struck early as Cole Skuse’s drilled effort rebounded off the post after just two minutes.

Salford’s Ryan Watson then almost scored a spectacular goal, taking a touch with his chest before unleashing a volley just over the crossbar from 20 yards out.

The visitors then scored two goals in quick succession. The first came after Alan Judge took an in-swinging free kick which was glanced on by Luke Chambers. The ball looped over Ammies keeper Tom King and into the top corner.

Just four minutes after, United debutant Myles Kenlock scrambled the ball into the net following another Judge set piece. Chambers again got a touch on the ball before it was cleared off the line and falling to Kenlock.

The hosts failed to apply any real pressure to a compact Colchester defence, with their best chances coming from a series of Ash Hunter free kicks, which mainly resulted in corners.

Shamal George, Colchester goalkeeper, pulled off some spectacular saves, first denying Conor McAleny low down to his left and then keeping out a Jordan Turnbull header from a corner.

Late substitute Corrie Andrews wrapped up the win and a perfect performance for the visitors, slotting home after a fantastic run and pass from Freddie Sears. Andrews was taken off with what appeared to be a back injury shortly after his goal.

George made one final save from Conor McAleny in stoppage time, ensuring Colchester can travel home with all three points.

Salford will be disappointed with what was a disjointed offensive performance as they fall seven points behind the play-off spots, sitting 10th in League Two.

Colchester record their first victory since November and move six points clear of the relegation zone, remaining 22nd in the league.
